PART 1 GENERAL

1.1 SECTION INCLUDES

A. Surface preparation and field application of paints and coatings.

1.2 RELATED SECTIONS

1.3 DEFINITIONS

A. Conform to ASTM D16 for interpretation of terms used in this Section.

1.4 SUBMITTALS

A. Submit under provisions of Section 01041.

B. Product Data: Provide data on all finishing products and special coatings.

C. Manufacturer's Instructions: Indicate special surface preparation procedures and substrate conditions requiring special attention.

 

1.5 QUALIFICATIONS

A. Manufacturer: Company specializing in manufacturing the Products specified in this section with minimum 10 years experience.

B. Applicator: Company and on-site Supervisor specializing in performing the work of this section with minimum 5 years experience or arrange for factory supervision of installation.

 

1.6 REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS

 

A. All work shall conform to all pertinent laws, ordinances and regulations of all bodies having jurisdiction. Comply with applicable codes, rules, regulations and building and safety laws relating to construction, public health and safety.

B. Contract Documents take precedence when they are more stringent than codes, ordinances, standards and statutes. Codes, ordinances, standards and statutes take precedence when they are more stringent or conflict with drawings and specifications. The following industry standards, specifications and codes are minimum requirements, (latest issue as adopted by local jurisdiction as of date of Contract):

1. Applicable Federal, State, County and Municipal laws and ordinances.

2. National Electrical Manufacturer's Association Standards

3. National Electrical Code

4. Underwriter's Laboratories, Inc. Standards

5. American National Standards Institute

6. American Society for Testing Materials Standards

7. National Fire Protection Association Standards

8. Occupational Safety and Health Act – Owner intends to strictly enforce all OSHA requirements pertaining to working in confined area.

9. All State Occupational Safety and Health Act(s), laws, or regulations.

10. OWNER Contractor Safety Guidelines (if any) – OWNER requires every member of the work crew and all sub-contractors read this manual and sign a statement attesting to the fact they have read, understand and concur with the guidelines.

1.7 FIELD SAMPLES

Not Applicable.

 

1.8 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

A. Deliver, store, protect and handle products to site under provisions of Section 01600.

B. Deliver products to site in sealed and labeled containers; inspect to verify acceptability.

C. Container label to include manufacturer's name, type of Coating, brand name, lot number, and instructions for mixing and reducing.

D. Store paint materials at minimum ambient temperature of 50 degrees F and a maximum of 90 degrees F degrees ), in ventilated area, and as required by manufacturer's instructions.

1.10 ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS

A. Do not apply materials when surface and ambient temperatures are outside the temperature ranges required by the paint product manufacturer.

B. Do not apply coatings when surface is wet, or damp. Dry substrate before application of coating.

 

PART 2 PRODUCTS

2.1 MANUFACTURERS

A. Epoxy.com Product No.2. as supplied by Epoxy.com a division of Epoxy Systems, Inc. of Dunnellon Florida and VT. Apply to final coating thickness of 20 mils (minimum).

B. Primer Coat: Self priming.

C. Substitutions: Under provisions of Section 01600 – NO SUBSTITUTIONS SHALL BE PERMITTED. No other coating or coating material may be used inside the tank.

2.2 MATERIALS

A. Coatings: Epoxy.com Product #2 as supplied by Epoxy.com a division of Epoxy Systems, Inc of Florida and Vermont

B. Accessory Materials:

1. DO NOT Thin the coating, unless specifically directed to do so by the Material Manufacturer in writing. If directed by the manufacturer, thinning must be done exactly to his/her specifications, and direct supervision by a factory representative.

2. Use solvents only for cleanup of tools and equipment. All solvents must be approved in advance by OWNER and the Material Manufacturer. Care will be taken to insure that no material is spilled onto the ground or leaked into the environment in any way. Waste solvents will be disposed of in accordance with Federal, State, Local, and OWNER regulations.

 

2.3 FINISHES

Not Applicable

PART 3 EXECUTION

3.1 EXAMINATION

A. Verify site conditions are satisfactory for proper application of coating materials.

B. Verify that substrate conditions are ready to receive work as instructed by the product manufacturer.

C. Examine surfaces scheduled to be finished prior to commencement of work. Report any condition (i.e. voids and defects in the surface) that may potentially affect proper application to the Engineer.

 

3.2 PREPARATION

A. Report defects and unclean surfaces which affect work of this section, to the Engineer.

B. Steel and Iron Surfaces: Remove existing coating by sandblasting down to bare white metal.

C. Concrete surfaces - Abrasive clean as required to insure proper bonding.

D. Material must be inspected and approved by a representative of the manufacturer before application can proceed.

 

3.3 APPLICATION

A. Apply products in accordance with manufacturer's instructions.

B. Protect all surfaces that are not to be coated (pipe opening, drains etc.)

C. Apply primer coat or first coat as soon after surface prep as physically possible. This first application must be done to steel surfaces before flash rusting can occur. If flash rusting occurs, do not continue with coating until all flash rust has been removed.

D. Do not apply finishes to surfaces that are not dry.

E. Apply each coat to uniform finish.

F. Allow applied coat to dry before next coat is applied.

G. Re-coat within 24 hours of the previous coating. If more than 24 hours passes between coats the Manufacturer and/or OWNER may direct the Contractor to roughen the last coat to insure proper bonding. If this happens the cost of this roughening and the cost of additional coating, plus all labor associated with this work will be considered to be the sole responsibility of the Contractor.

H. Ensure all wetted surfaces of hatch covers, sealing surface and openings are properly coated.

 

3.4 FINISHING MECHANICAL AND ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT

Not Applicable.

3.5 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL

A. A coatings manufacturer’s representative shall test the coating thickness as work progresses.

3.6 CLEANING

A. Collect waste material which may constitute a fire hazard, place in closed metal containers with appropriate labeling. Place in area designated by OWNER Project Coordinator for removal by OWNER.

 

3.7 SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

A. Ventilation: Provide adequate tank ventilation per Manufacturer's recommendations.

B. Equipment used in tank shall be non-sparking, grounded, and/or explosion proof.

C. All electrical cords shall be equipped with GFI safety devices per OWNER Safety Guidelines.

D. Air for certified air-supplied masks shall be supplied by a source other than the compressor used for blasting and/or painting.

If any product fails to meet this warranty, the liability of Supplier will be limited to replacement of any non-conforming material if notice of such non-conformity is given to Supplier within the warranty period for the material (as indicated above), or within 1 year of the delivery of materials (whichever is sooner). Supplier may in its discretion refund the price received by Supplier in lieu of replacing the material. No customer, distributor, or representative of Supplier is authorized to change or modify the published specifications of this warranty in any way. No one is authorized to make oral warranties on behalf of Supplier. In order to obtain replacement or refund the customer must provide written notice containing full details of the non-conformity. Supplier reserves the right to inspect the non-conforming material prior to replacement. EXCEPT FOR THE EXPRESSED WARRANTY STATED ABOVE, THERE ARE NO OTHER WARRANTIES, EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION, ANY IMPLIED WARRANTY OF MERCHANTABILITY OR FITNESS FOR PURPOSE. Many of our products are made on an individual order basis.   Unless authorized in writing by us in writing before the material is made, there are no returns on items purchased from us, once the order has been processed, and the material made. In the event of authorized returns a restocking charge will be charged in the amount of 30% of the value of the material returned or $150 whichever is greater.  No returns on non-list priced items.  All Returns are for merchandise (store) credit only, no cash or credit card credits.  In the event of a return, buyer is responsible for the cost of shipping and handling in both directions.
